Pope Francis has declared 2016 a Jubilee Year of Mercy for all of us. What does that mean? Fr. Mike Schmitz offers some insight on that, explaining the significance of a Jubilee Year and showing how we can be merciful toward others in our everyday lives through the spiritual and corporal works of mercy. With those words, Pope Francis pushed open the Holy Door of St. Peter's Basilica and officially inaugurated the "Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy," a special year called by the pope so Catholics everywhere can focus on forgiveness, compassion and mercy, and be forgiven of their sins.

How can you observe this Year of Mercy?
Pope Francis recommends:
- taking a pilgrimage, a journey to a place where God has shown special grace--there are opportunities near and far!
- Visit our cathedrals.
- Meditate on the spiritual and corporal works of mercy.
- Look at our own cynicism, discouragement, indifference, or apathy and have mercy on ourselves.
- Observe "24 hours for the Lord" on the Friday and Saturday preceding the 4th week of Lent--a time of intense prayer and availability of the sacrament of reconciliation.
