Before taking on a special observance, why not try to root out a particular sin that you may be struggling with at this time.  In addition, consider other ways of making this time special, e.g., daily Mass, Stations of the Cross, attending the lecture series each Wednesday at Christ Sun of Justice, (for details of all these community opportunities click on sub-tabs on the Lent/Easter section).  Consider daily/weekly family prayer time, a weekly sacrificial meal with the saved proceeds going to Operation Rice Bowl (check out the work of CRS under our Lent/Easter Tab and also under LINKS of Interest tab).  Special graces are available to us during these seasons of the Church year.  In our observance, we open ourselves to whatever ways God wishes to help us grow as disciples of Jesus.

The guidelines for Lent regarding fast and abstinence are as follows:

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence. As a sign of our penance, we preserve for the Diocese of Albany the custom of abstinence from meat on Fridays of Lent. Abstinence binds all Catholics who are 14 years of age and older. Fast binds all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. Fasting refers to the quantity of food eaten. Traditionally, fasting calls for only one full meal per day. By retaining these traditions for our Diocese we do not intend that they be interpreted as laws binding under pain of sin, but as customs from which we will not hold ourselves lightly excused. They are expressions of our desire to be converted in our hearts, to be reconciled with each other, and to love our neighbor.
